The Executive Assistant’s Most Valuable Decision? Cancel the Meeting
A strong calendar is not measured by how full it is. It is measured by whether the executive’s time is reserved for decisions, relationships, and work that truly needs their presence.
A strong calendar is not a trophy. It is an operating system for attention.
One of the most valuable decisions an Executive Assistant can make is to cancel a meeting—not automatically reschedule it, shorten it, or move it to another crowded day.
Before protecting a meeting, ask better questions: Does this actually need the executive? Could it be an email? Could someone else represent them? Could the decision be made asynchronously? Does everyone on the invite need to be there?
An assistant who only follows instructions can keep a calendar busy. An assistant who understands the business can keep an executive effective. That distinction requires judgment, context, and the confidence to protect time for work that truly moves priorities forward.
